Nadia's Starting Point

Nadia was a medical resident in Canada, completing a demanding clinical placement after moving from abroad. She was confident in her medical knowledge, but not in how she was understood.

She had struggled with the "R" sound her entire life, not just in English, but in her first language too. Words like "paper" sounded more like "papow," and "try" became "tie." In most cases, people struggled to understand her. But in fast-paced hospital environments, clarity wasn't optional. It was critical.

Whether she was giving instructions during emergencies, or speaking with patients, Nadia wanted to be clear the first time, every time.

The Approach: Sound Clarity Under Pressure

Over the course of 18 sessions, Nadia worked with a licensed speech-language pathologist at Speak Fluent. The goal was to improve clarity of words in sentences as a whole, not just the 'R' sound in isolation. Together, they focused on:

  • Breaking down how the "r" sound is made and why it was tricky for her
  • Using step-by-step guidance to practice the sound in single words, then short phrases
  • Applying the skill in medical scenarios to help it transfer into her daily work
  • Building muscle memory so the change felt automatic, not effortful in high-stakes situations

Practice wasn't limited to drills. Nadia practiced using common hospital instructions and patient conversations so that clarity became part of her routine.

The Turning Point

After several weeks, Nadia successfully produced the "R" sound with minimal support at the beginning of words. She knew she could repeat herself with clarity, without worrying about being misunderstood in high-pressure moments.

The Result

By the end of her program, after 18 sessions, she:

  • Could pronounce "R" reliably in urgent situations, remembering the strategies that helped her in sessions
  • Felt more in control during emergencies and patient interactions
  • Reported a noticeable boost in clarity, comfort, and confidence

Why It Worked

Nadia didn't just learn how to say a single word, she learned a pattern of sound that was crucial for clearly conveying critical information in a healthcare setting. With a structured and supportive approach, she no longer worries that her speech will hold her back in the moments that matter most.
