How a Kindergarten Teacher Learned to Speak Smoothly in Her Work and Social Life

This client did not have a speech or language disorder, but rather has received communication coaching for their communication goals. This success story is not indicative of what everyone will experience, but rather provides an idea of potential signs of communication difficulties and ways to improve. Your own experience may differ as it will depend on many factors, including practice frequency, language background, and listening skills.

Alice's Starting Point

Alice is a bilingual kindergarten teacher who speaks both Mandarin and English. She had experienced stuttering earlier in life, and while that had improved, she still felt something was off, especially with how her speech flowed.

Whether she was singing, leading story time, or chatting with coworkers, she often felt like her words didn't flow the same as others. She also noticed moments where her pitch or phrasing felt awkward or out of sync.

Alice wanted her speaking, and her singing, to feel more fluid, connected, and expressive.

The Approach

Alice worked with two Speak Fluent communication coaches, both licensed speech therapists, over the course of 12 sessions. Together, they focused on:

  • Breathing in the right places while singing, so her vocals sounded smoother and more natural
  • Practicing how her voice moved within phrases (intonation) so conversations felt expressive, not flat
  • Pacing her speech more evenly, especially when teaching young children or speaking socially
  • Applying these habits in both personal and professional situations, not just structured activities

The Turning Point

Alice noticed a shift during one of the sessions. As she spoke to her speech therapist, it felt like her voice was finally matching her intention. Later that week, she had a casual conversation with a friend and felt the same smoothness carry over.

The Result

After 12 sessions, Alice:

  • Felt more natural and fluent in her conversations
  • Could sing with smoother timing and better control
  • Reported greater ease when talking with colleagues, children, and friends
  • Developed stronger awareness of how her breath and tone influenced her message

Why It Worked

With guidance, structure, and practice tailored to her goals, Alice built the kind of communication habits that matched her energy and intention. Her voice now supports her, whether she's teaching, singing, or simply connecting with others.
