Who is this client?
Shawna immigrated from Nigeria to Canada several years ago but had difficulty building rapport with customers because she avoided going off-script. As a person who stutters, Shawna’s primary goal was to feel more comfortable speaking to people without relying on written notes. Shawna was in the process of going to different interviews but had little confidence and felt anxious because of her stutter. At times, she felt choked up and unable to breathe because of her speech struggles; communicating became more of a burden rather than a way to express herself. During interviews, Shawna needed to improve her ability to:
- Talk in a group of people.
- Describe and explain her achievements.
- Effectively talk about her strengths and weaknesses.
- Talk about her goals.
What were her goals?
Shawna wanted to work with a Speech-Language Pathologist to manage stuttering behaviours using various fluency strategies to feel more comfortable speaking in different contexts. She also wanted to overcome her anxiety about stuttering to feel more confident in other social settings.
How did Speak Fluent's Speech- Language Pathologist help Shawna?
After 6 sessions, Shawna felt more comfortable participating in different interviews, including group panels. She was increasingly more confident in various speaking situations and felt more confident going off-script with clients at work. Shawn became more in control of her stuttering and became less anxious to participate in social settings that made her uncomfortable before Speak Fluency.
